Paso del Coyote Cuajimoloyas
Plants, Mountain Life & Hidden Views
Ruta: De las Nubes
Claudia’s personal favorite in the Sierra Norte, this beautiful loop hike around Cuajimoloyas offers a perfect introduction to the landscapes and rhythms of the Pueblos Mancomunados.
Starting directly from the village, we walk through cultivated fields, forest paths, and open mountain scenery while learning about local medicinal plants and the rich biodiversity of the region. Along the way, we encounter giant agaves — a plant so closely connected to this place that the original Zapotec name of the village, Ya’a Cuetzi, means Agave Flower.
For those who enjoy a little adventure, the route includes an optional ascent through the rocky passage of Paso del Coyote to a viewpoint with beautiful views across the surrounding forests and valleys. The hike can also be adapted for those who prefer to stay on gentler terrain.
One of the highlights of the day is arriving back in the village for lunch with Marta — a simple and unforgettable meal that makes you feel welcomed into mountain life.
A day of plants, stories, landscapes, and warm community hospitality in the heart of the Sierra Norte.
